CANINE STARTER GUIDE

Your step by step guide to raw feeding your dog or puppy

Cacti

This guide will be your step by step resource for transitioning your dog or puppy to a species appropriate raw diet. If you follow this guide and familiarize yourself with our website (www.TheNutritionCode.info) you will have no problem transitioning, however if you do find yourself in a sticky situation feel free to post in our community group if you have any questions or concerns https://www.facebook.com/groups/1433569413365162/

A few things to remember before we start

  1. A Prey Model Raw Diet is made up of meat, organs and bones in the following ratios Muscle Meat = 80%   Bones = 10%   Liver = 5%    Offal/Organs = 5%

  2. Our canine companions do not need fruits, veggies or grains. They are carnivores not designed to consume or utilize these foods. https://www.thenutritioncode.info/carbohydrates and https://www.thenutritioncode.info/carnivores are great articles to look at.

   3. You will not need artificial vitamins and minerals. With variety and rotation of proteins your canine companions will get everything they need from their food. Don’t believe us? Check out these charts https://www.thenutritioncode.info/no-need-to-supplement

   4. Slow and steady wins the race. Following the guide is important, but each dog or puppy is different and may need a slower transition. Listen to your dog or puppy and watch their poop. These are best indicators of how things are going. https://www.thenutritioncode.info/poop

A quick overview before we jump into the nitty gritty

Days 1-14 85% meat 5% liver, 10% bone

Days 15 and on 80% meat, 5% liver, 5% other secreting organ, 10% bone

Step One: Eliminate ALL kibble in the diet. Kibble and raw not only digest at different rates which can cause digestive upset but because of the carbohydrate load (fruits and veggies are carbs in addition to grain) the stomach acid is not strong enough to break down bone or neutralize bacteria which can leave your companion open to illness https://www.thenutritioncode.info/mixing-raw-and-kibble

Days 1-14 85% meat 5% liver, 10% bone

Especially if your dog has been on commercial food such as dry food/kibble you are going want to start out slow to give your dog or puppy time for their stomach acid to go from more alkaline (4-5 pH) to more acidic (1-2 pH) This will prepare them to digest not only raw meat, but raw bone as well and neutralize any possible bacteria.

Only providing 5% liver will help avoid stomach upset from the full 10% organs as this can be extremely rich.

Remember different bones of different species and body parts contain different meat to bone rations so to ensure you are well on your way to balancing your dog or puppy's diet check out our meat to bone ratio guide https://www.thenutritioncode.info/meat-to-bone-ratios

Feed: 85% of your companions’ daily requirement as muscle meat which also includes lung, gizzards, heart etc.) 5% will be liver, 10% will be bone

Days 15-on Meat and Bone

At this time, you are now going to introduce other 5% of secreting organs which can include kidney, pancreas, spleen etc.

Feed: 80% meat, 5% liver, 5% other secreting organ, 10% bone.

Remember every dog and puppy is different. If you see loose stool or other things you may question take a step back, slow down and post in the group.

How much should you feed?

For Adults Dogs should be fed 3% of their adult weight

Most people split this amount into two meals per day

Example:

Cricket. She is a French Bulldog and weighs 30 lbs.

Since our frenchie is an adult we want to feed her 3% of her body weight per day.

3% of 30 lbs or 30 x 0.03 is 0.9 lbs or 14.4 oz per DAY.

Again this is just a guideline. Dogs that are more active may need a higher percentage, while dogs that are having trouble losing weight or have slow metabolism may be need a lower percentage.

For puppies, there are tree methods.

Method 1: You can feed 3% of their predicted adult weight

Method 2: Feed a specific percentage based on age.

Age and % Body Weight:

7 – 10 weeks -->  8% – 10%

10 – 16 weeks -->  7.5% – 8.5%

16 – 20 weeks -->  6.5% – 7.5%

20 – 24 weeks -->  5.5% – 6.5%

24 – 36 weeks -->  4.5% – 5.5%

36 – 56 weeks -->  3.5% – 4.5%

56 – 68 weeks -->  3.50%

68 weeks plus --> 2% – 3%

Method 3: Feed as much as the puppy would like to at each meal from a balanced batch

Most people split this amount into 3 or more meals a day.

Sample STARTER Recipe:

Beef Recipe for a 10 lb. Batch

4 lbs. of Beef Chunks

11.6 oz. of Chicken Gizzards
